Tom's Place and the American Legion Riders, Douglasville Chapter Fund Raiser / Party

 4/2 by SportsterJohn

This article was written when I was working with a motorcycle magazine and was intended for the print edition.

Its early Saturday afternoon, time to head out to Toms place for lunch then ride over to the American Legion Hall for the American Legion Riders 1st event.  Toms place is located on 411, a bit north of Cartersville.  There was a pretty good mix of people today.  It is not strictly a biker bar; it is more like a neighborhood bar in a neighborhood with a lot of bikers

When I got there, there were four other bikes in the parking lot.  When I left an hour later, there were nine.  My main reasons for going there today were to discuss the ad that Tom is running in the magazine and to get some food in me before I headed over to Dallas to catch the Legion affair.  I had a good barbeque sandwich and took a few pictures while I was waiting on my food to arrive.  My first victims were Jay and Ruth who were chilling out on the deck.  I then ventured inside and caught Billy and Shirley having a cold one.

I jumped down 75 back to Cartersville and then hit 92 south over to Paulding country.  The ALR event started with a poker run that left Double Vision at 11:00am, made stops at the Am Vets in Lithia Springs, the Douglasville, Villa Rica and Rockmart American Legion posts, and ended at the American Legion Post in Dallas.  The American Legion Riders is a national riding association consisting of American Legion members.  The riding association at post 111 started in Aug of 2005 and has about 65 members according to its director, Rick.

I arrived about 4:00, which was about 30, or so minutes after the poker run had finished.  Rick mentioned to me that the ride raised about $1500, which will be used to help veterans and children in Paulding County.  I estimate that there were about 200 or so bikes on the ride.  About 100 or so stayed at the legion hall for the after ride festivities, which included many door prizes, donated by local businesses, great food and of course plenty of beverages.  I ran into a bunch of USMVMC members as well as ALR members whom I knew from Double Visions as well as various events around the area.

Billy and Shirley

I caught Hippy in the act of trying to steal Shirley from Billy.  Billy was good though, he had his beer.  Love it when a man has his priorities straight.

After finishing the barbeque, I took a picture of GW and  Deborah then headed over to Dallas for the ALR gig.

I shot some pictures of the various happening inside the legion hall.  As you can see, the local business community was generous in their donations to this cause.  The donations were given away as door prizes as well as raffle prizes. After most of the speeches were over and the prizes were handed out, the band took over and the place started rocking.  >About this time, my wife was getting off work and since it was my birthday, I had to get home to get my swag.  I will do a little more investigating and find out if there are any interesting stories from the rest of the party, or better yet, the after party, which I reluctantly had to miss.
